Greetings de Portola Families and welcome to the 2018-19 school year!

My name is Darren Kelly and I am the returning President of the de Portola PTA. On behalf of the PTA, I would like to offer a warm welcome to all new de Portola families. We are here to ease the transition to our school for both you and your children. In addition to bringing families together, our PTA implements programs which expose our children to art, gardening, technology, and broadcasting…as well as orchestrating events such as the Book Fair or Jog-a-thon which help secure funding for items ranging from copy paper to library books to playground equipment to classroom computers.

To all returning families, I sincerely thank you for your support of the PTA last year. The PTA had record returns on our Membership drive, Jog-a-thon and Book Fair…while introducing new events and programs including STEM Fridays, Trunk or Treat, Buddy Family Program, and the build-out of our new Science Lab. We also implemented Konstella, our web-based platform for classroom and school-wide communications.

Here are our three primary goals for this school year:

Community– In order to foster a strong sense of community, we continue to seek new ways to increase family involvement and shorten the time it takes to truly feel a part of the de Portola community. This year we are also focused on forging an even tighter partnership with our teachers to identify new ways to better fulfill the needs of our students.

Identify New Funding Sources -   Due to demographics, de Portola receives only a fraction of the funding received by other schools in our district.  This means that the majority of the PTA budget goes to the purchase of equipment and programs that other schools would be able to purchase with State funding (Computers/Reading Counts/Art Masters/etc).  By securing grants and other private sector contributions, we can help ensure that our children are never at a resource disadvantage.

Partner with our new Principal While we were sad to see Dr. Gomez go, the PTA is excited to welcome Mr. Morrow to de Portola as our new Principal. Mr. Morrow comes to our school with a wealth of experience and success at other schools in our district. We will work closely in the coming months to leverage Mr. Morrow’s experience to identify areas of improvement for our PTA, as well as in supporting our continued investment in STEM programs and equipment including computers, robotics, printers and drones.

The one thing we should all have in common is a commitment to ensure that our children have the best possible experience at de Portola. In support of our goal to invest in our children, here is what I ask of each of you:

1. Fill out the PTA Membership form and if possible please sign up for one of our Patriot Club options. As always, our goal this year is 100% participation with either a Basic or Patriot Club membership.

2. If you or your spouse works for a corporation, please reach out to the HR department and ask if they have a 501(c)(3) Matching Funds program…whereby corporations match your donations to non-profit entities like de Portola. If they do, please note our Employer Identification Number (EIN) is 95-3527002. By matching your Patriot Club membership with corporate funds, we can bring in a significant amount of additional revenue.

3. Please consider joining us in the planning and execution of our goals. Regardless of whether you are able to attend meetings or be on campus during school hours, we need your help. There are numerous committees and one-off events that need volunteers, with a wide range of time commitments. Information on volunteer opportunities will be available on Konstella.

Please email me with any questions and I look forward to seeing you at the first PTA meeting of the year on Tuesday Sept 18th at 7:00 in the MPR.

Sincerely,
Darren Kelly
